Ever feel down about your lashes? Perhaps they are short and stubby, maybe they fall out regularly and you have no idea why, or maybe they are thin and barely visible (even with mascara). At Velour, we know that lashes can make or break your confidence, and it’s important to get to the root of the problem - literally.
The best way to do this is by nourishing your lashes and creating a healthy environment for them to grow – and the most effective way to do that is by applying a lash serum! If this is new to you, let us explain what a lash serum is, what it does, and how it will become your new best friend. #lashbestie
THE IMPORTANCE OF LASH HEALTH
Your lashes are like the hair on your head – the better you take care of your hair, the better it will look and the longer it will grow! Using healthy, invigorating and hydrating products around your eyes will contribute to the health of your lashes. The type of makeup and skincare you apply in the area can also directly impact the way lashes grow, potentially causing negative effects if there are not-so-clean ingredients inside – or, if you’re too aggressive when applying or removing products. Being informed and educated about ingredients and lash health in general will enable you to choose the products that are best for you and your lashes.
When applying skincare or makeup to the eye area, use light tapping motions (rather than swiping or rubbing) to avoid disrupting the delicate skin. Pro tip: if you’re using your fingers, use your ring finger.
When removing products from the eye area, make sure you use a clean makeup remover or cleanser, preferably formulated with nourishing ingredients. A cleanser with hydrating ingredients will put moisture back into the skin, even while you’re removing a product sitting on the surface – Sodium Hyaluronate is one of our favorite hydrators! Not heard of it? Learn more about the Hyaluronic Acid derivative here. If you need a little extra help removing makeup, make sure you’re using a gentle microfiber cloth or reusable cotton pad, lightly massaging and breaking down the product on the skin.
Another contributor to lash health is the type of environment you live in. Is it hot or cold? Dry or humid? Is the air clean? All these elements affect the health of your lashes and can help direct you towards the best ingredients to look for. If you live in a dry climate, the ingredients that your lashes may need most are moisturizing, conditioning and hydrating.
LASH CARE IS THE NEW SKIN CARE
Do you currently have a daily skincare or haircare routine that you hope will improve the health of your skin and hair? If so, why not have a routine that does the same for your lashes? This is what we like to call ‘lash care’. Simply incorporating a lash care product will boost your lash health and start your journey towards longer, stronger lashes.
The perfect product that encompasses lash care is *drum roll please* a lash serum. Think of it as a hair oil or hydrating hair mask, or a serum for your face, neck and décolleté. Lash serums are practically the love child of haircare and skincare!
HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR LASHES USING A LASH SERUM
A lash serum is a concentrated lash enhancement product that stimulates lash growth. To achieve optimal results, you want to apply it daily to lengthen, thicken and strengthen your lashes over time, extending the anagen growth phase of the lash growth cycle.
No matter the lash issue, a lash serum will benefit your lashes. Whether you’re battling short stubby lashes, or thin brittle ones that fall out prematurely, you can achieve promising results that boost lash confidence – who doesn’t want that?!
Using a clean, peptide-based lash serum will allow you to use this product for maintenance, ensuring a long lifespan of healthy lashes (meaning you can use it daily without any negative side effects). But beware, there are some not-so-healthy lash serums on the market that you may want to stay away from, especially if you have sensitive skin. Some chemical-based lash serums have been known to cause irritation so lookout for non-irritating peptide or keratin-based serums.
TYPES OF LASH SERUM
To ensure you feel confident in your lash care journey, we’ve broken the different types of serum down a bit more:
Peptide-Based: Peptides are gentle, yet highly effective proteins that boost the overall health of your lashes. By stimulating collagen, elastin and keratin they help to lengthen, strengthen, thicken eyelashes and so much more! They can take a little longer to demonstrate results than a chemical serum, so be sure to use a peptide-based serum daily for best results.

Keratin-Based: Keratin helps to strengthen, smooth, hydrate and even straighten your lashes (think lash lift treatment). A keratin-based formula is on the ‘healthier’ nourishing side of the spectrum for serums, but they’re often not as effective as peptide-based serums in the long run.
Chemical-Based:A chemical-based serum will contain prostaglandin analogues, which are most commonly used as glaucoma medications. The main side effect, however, is longer, darker and thicker eyelashes. They have been known to be irritating to the eye, and there have even been complaints that these hormone-driven ingredients can cause darkening to the skin, drooping of the eyelid and changing color of the iris.
Some synthetic prostaglandins that you want to avoid include:
