Celebrate Pride 2024 with Velour

As the exciting themes and celebrations of Pride 2024 quickly approach; such as Infinite Horizons, Be Limitless, and Power in Pride, we reached out to our community with a simple yet profound question: What does Pride mean to you?

In the kaleidoscope of responses, we found stories of resilience, celebration, activism, and love. Especially within the beauty community - a space where self-expression knows no bounds and individuality reigns supreme.

What does Pride mean to you as a member and ally?

“Pride to me is a celebration of authenticity, freedom, and the resilience of the LGBTQ+ community. It's a time to reflect on the progress we've made while acknowledging the work still needed to achieve true equality.” - Kale Irving

“Supporting people who may struggle to support themselves during difficult times! It can be very difficult to be a minority and need to stick up for yourself alone, so by aiding in being an ally, I show my support for those unable to fully support themselves because of the struggles they face from the community on a day-to-day basis.” - Pouja Tharan

What is your favorite way to celebrate Pride in your city?

“My favorite way to celebrate Pride in Miami is by attending the vibrant and inclusive events that take place throughout the city. From the colorful parades to the thought-provoking art exhibits and the lively parties, there's always something for everyone to enjoy. But beyond the festivities, Pride is also a time for reflection and education, where we can come together to learn from one another and foster greater understanding and empathy.” - Svetlana Uryanskaya

“I love supporting others, especially family and friends who are in the pride community! I always feel so welcomed in it, and it’s so nice to see others expressing their love. I’ve always wanted to go and celebrate at festivals and parades, but I always have supported by making my loved ones feel special always and I’m there to always remind them how much they’re loved.” - Mariela Romo

What is one piece of advice for someone looking to get more involved within the community?

“One piece of advice for someone looking to get more involved within the community is to not do it alone. We often feel pressured to just figure it out ourselves, but you do not have to! Get involved with your partner, a friend, or a family member.” - Jasmine Yin

“To be more conscious of other people’s perspective and be more curious. It is ok to not have great knowledge on the matter, but you should still be politely curious to better your understanding.” - Noémie Gauthier

How can we make the beauty space more inclusive for members of the LGBTQ+?

“I believe that one of the biggest things is showing the diversity of the community within the social posts and ad campaigns within beauty industries.” - Adriana Quijada

“We can make a beauty space that is more inclusive for this community by asking for their input and seeing what they lack in the beauty industry or what they would like to see implemented. What can be done to have them feel more supported, respected, and included in the beauty world.” - Ana Elizabeth
