How To Apply a Lash Serum for Longer & Stronger Lashes at Home

You want longer, stronger, healthier lashes, and a lash serum seems to be a one-size-fits-all solution – right? Well, you might want to learn more before committing; what type of formula is right for you, how you apply it to make the most impact, and how long you'll wait until you see any results. Good thing you came to the right place! As leaders in lashes, we feel obligated to educate you on everything lash serums!

CHOOSING THE RIGHT FORMULA

Lash serums come in all shapes and sizes, formula-wise that is. So, choosing the right one for you can be a tad overwhelming. Whether you suffer from your natural lashes falling out far too often, or they’re just short, thin and brittle, there’s going to be an option for you. Plenty of lash serums are available that help enhance your natural lashes in a healthy, results-driven way!

And to no one's surprise, there are a lot of serums that pretty much all state the same thing – thicker, longer, stronger lashes with regular use. But if we break each formula down, which ones are actually going to support your lash care journey? When deciding on a new serum, you definitely want to consider things like sensitivity – will this irritate my eyes? And just as important... ingredients – will they make the difference I'm looking for? So, to make research easy for you, we’ve categorized the different types of serums into peptide-based (our personal fave), keratin-based and chemical-based.

Peptide-Based Lash Serum: Peptides are gentle, yet highly effective proteins that boost the overall health of your lashes. By stimulating collagen, elastin and keratin, they are known to help lengthen, strengthen, and thicken eyelashes. They can take a little longer to demonstrate results than a chemical serum, so be sure to use a peptide-based serum daily for best results. Some of our favorite peptides include:

  • Biotinoyl Tripeptide-1

  • Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17

  • Myristoyl Hexapeptide-16

  • Octopeptide-2

  • Acetyl-Tripeptide-3

Keratin-Based Lash Serum: Keratin is known to help strengthen, smooth, hydrate and even straighten your lashes – think lash lift treatment! A keratin-based formula is on the ‘healthier’ nourishing side of the spectrum for serums, but they’re often not as effective as peptide-based serums in the long run.

Chemical-Based Lash Serum: A chemical-based serum will contain prostaglandin analogues, which are most commonly used as glaucoma medications. The main side effect, however, is longer, darker and thicker eyelashes.

APPLYING A LASH SERUM FOR OPTIMAL RESULTS

Once you’ve selected the best lash serum for you, you’ll want to use it consistently – aka daily. This is the most critical factor in the results we know you’ll be dying to see. Daily use will create an environment where your lashes can grow to their optimal potential. If the lash line and surrounding area consisting of the lashes themselves, follicles and skin, is in a healthy state; hydrated, nourished, revitalized and strong – they’ll have a prolonged growth cycle. Meaning they’ll stay intact and become longer, stronger and thicker!

A lash serum can be applied in the morning or in the evening, but depending on which formula you have ensure to follow the directions as some require application more frequently than others.

Now when it comes to the actual application process of a lash serum, it’s easy peasy lemon squeezy! You want to apply it to clean, dry skin along the lash line. Whether that’s just the upper lash line or lower as well, it’s up to you! A quick tip is a little usually goes a long way, so we recommend using one dip from the bottle for both eyes. Let it dry completely before applying any makeup or skincare products to the area afterwards, and voila! All done.

WHAT TO EXPECT

If you’re a beginner to lash serums, you’re probably wondering what to expect. Generally, you should start to see results around the 4 to 6-week mark when using a lash serum daily. Consistency will make the biggest difference – it’s just like skincare!

Also, patience is key. It takes time to see initial results, just like your skincare or haircare journey – think of it as a long-term relationship! Lash serums are classified as a maintenance product, and that’s because you follow a routine to maintain the results over time, it’s not a quick one-time fix.

Lastly, when considering the timeline, the type of serum you use will pretty much determine when you start to see results and can easily vary in weeks.

  • Peptide-Based Lash Serum: 6 weeks, best in 12 (Velour Long & Strong Lash Serum

  • Keratin-Based Lash Serum: 4-6 weeks, best in 12

  • Chemical-Based Lash Serum: 4 weeks, best in 12

Comfort is important – applying the product regularly should not affect the way your eye area feels. If there’s any irritation, itchiness or redness, you’re most likely using a chemical-based serum and experiencing sensitivities, or it could be an allergy. In either case, we’d recommend discontinuing use. Your lash serum should be totally gentle and comfortable to apply every single day

Once you go down the lash care rabbit hole, a serum will become your best friend – and it'll stick with you ‘til the end! A daily dose of your fave formula applied correctly – and more importantly, consistently – will make your lashes feel healthy, nourished and brand spankin’ new.
